Sound is an integral part of good moviemaking and an area that is critical for new moviemakers to learn. Good sound will not make a bad movie good, but bad sound will definitely make a good movie bad!  So, listen up and learn about sound – we even have some sample effects you can use for your next film!

9.01.07 - Components of Sound

Filmmakers approach their movies with the knowledge that sound is an integral part of telling their story.  In many instances it can be as important as the visual images of the film.  There are three parts to all sound in moviemaking:

  1. THE HUMAN VOICE OR DIALOGUE
  2. THE SOUND EFFECTS
  3. THE MUSIC OR SOUNDTRACK

This week we will discuss the Human Voice and its place in your movie.

Dialogue is the way you communicate with the audience and tell the story with words.  It helps make the character real and convinces the audience that the person they see on the screen is the character of your movie and not just an actor acting in a film.  Variations in the delivery of dialogue can impact the way a character is viewed by the audience.  Accents, volume of voice (soft or loud), speed of talking, all can be used to  create a personality for you character and make your movie more real and entertaining.

Here is the same line of dialogue presented 3 different ways. Notice how your view of the character changes even though the script does not.
